Staind – September 14th, 2026 at Northwell Jones Beach Theater
I saw Staind at Jones Beach this week at Northwell Jones Beach Theater, and somewhere between the lights, the ocean, and songs, I found myself thinking about how strange it is to hear your past through older ears.
The setlist was full of songs that once belonged to a much younger version of me. But Something to Remind You hit differently.
It’s a song about what we leave behind—memories, words, pieces of ourselves—and the people who carry those things after we’re gone. There’s something quietly heartbreaking about it, but also comforting.
“When I’m gone” isn’t necessarily just about literal death.
That’s certainly the strongest reading—the song repeatedly imagines the narrator no longer being here. But there’s another layer: What remains of us when a particular version of ourselves is gone? You can read it as being about leaving behind an old chapter, an old identity, old mistakes, or a life you no longer recognize.
That’s especially interesting when you’re hearing it years after you first encountered it. The song can stay the same while the person listening to it changes.
Maybe that’s what music does best. It keeps little pieces of us alive.
The songs stay the same.
We’re the ones who change.
